Get Lost, Find Yourself
As I woke up this morning, I realized that it is officially my birthday week! I was born on my mother’s birthday and every 7 years our birthday falls on Mother’s Day; this year being one of them. I am of course thankful for life as I recognize it as a gift. And like most, I have reflected on my purpose and service here on earth.
All this time, I had been focused on being a voice for the voiceless and I now know that I was walking along the right path but I had not figured out exactly how to provide a vehicle for others to speak their truths for themselves.
And if I can be completely transparent with you, I was walking in my purpose but still I experienced moments of uncertainty. My resolution was to simply keep walking.
Have you ever felt lost although you know your are going the right way? I know I’m not the only one who had entered an address into GPS only to be directed by Siri on my iPhone to a location close to my final destination but not exactly to the door. Such is life.
God gives us internal navigation and he even gives us the address but we are still responsible for paying attention to our surroundings and using our spirits of discernment to go the right way.
Last year on my birthday, I launched my multimedia company 13th & Joan to create a way to produce quality media. Over the past year, I had really focused on the production of the plays, films and books that I created for others.
On the heels of the 1 year anniversary of 13th & Joan, I began to focus on the production of books and films that I could empower others to create to tell their stories.
This year as I prepare to celebrate my birthday, I have come to realize two very important lessons:
1. It is perfectly fine to be lost as long as you are headed in the right direction.
2. Sometimes the very things that you are in search of are already in your possession.
Legacy in my opinion is all we will really have to show for the time that we lived on earth. Last year, I promised to create meaningful media that would remind us to love ourselves and recognize our worth. This year, I promise to not only keep producing meaningful media but to also use 13th & Joan as a vehicle to empower others to do the same.
Since announcing that 13th & Joan is “Open for Business”, the response has been overwhelming. I am so excited for all of the new authors and new film projects that we are blessed to be apart of. I’ve figured out that my purpose is not just to write words but to tell stories with all my heart. Our truths set us free. And to the teacher that said I’d never be able to write a good paper, well if I ever saw her again, I’d tell her thank you.
To date, I’ve written books, screenplays, stage productions, directed films, ghostwritten books for others and coached authors. The very thing that she said I wouldn’t be able to do is the very thing that birthed my reason for existence.
I’ve figured out that there are no true limits on our lives and no true destinations that we must arrive at. Life has always been and will always be about the journey. Where are you going? All my love. ❤️
